Supreme Court convicts Sasikala in corruption case, CM bid ends”

Tamil Nadu acting Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and the chief minister-aspirant, Public Works Minister Edapadi K. Palanisamy, are to call on Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao. However she was not invited the form the government and on Tuesday she was convicted by the Supreme Court in disproportionate assets case. Sasikala was for decades the closest companion of J Jayalalithaa, who was Tamil Nadu's chief minister for four terms until her death in December.

Following the top courts verdict, Sasikala will have to surrender to the police in Chennai and can be imprisoned for four years.

Sasikala, who broke down on hearing the court verdict, held discussions with senior party leaders and MLAs and expelled Panneerselvam along with 20 other rebel leaders.

But before Tuesday's ruling she appeared to have won enough support to be sworn in by the state assembly this week. Addressing the media, he said he will not allow the party to go into the hands of few of VK Sasikala's family members.

The governor heard competing pitches from both camps and chose to invite Mr. Palanisami to form the government after he concluded that Mr Panneerselvam did not command a majority in the House.

He was tipped for the Chief Minister's post after Jayalalithaa died but that did not happen.Hailing from Nedungulam village in Salem district, Palaniswami belongs to the Gounder community.

Sasikala's elevation by the party was questioned by caretaker chief minister O Panneerselvam, who said he had been "forced" to resign to make way for her.

Edapaddi Palanisami took over as the 13th chief minister of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

Mr Palanisami, clearly on Ms Sasikala's advice, inducted in his 31-member Cabinet the party's new number two, K. Sengotaiyyan, in place of "MaFoi" K. Pandiarajan, who had shifted his loyalty to Mr Panneerselvam.

The verdict may have prevented the state from plunging into another political chaos but the crisis is far from being resolved. Sasikala will also have to face trial in a case related to acquiring illegal foreign exchange through an acquaintance in Malaysia and using the money to purchase the Kodanad Tea Estate in the Nilgiris, along with her sister-in-law J Elavarasi. "Many MLAs will support only Amma's rule and not rule of a family", he said. Jayalalithaa herself was identified as the main accused but was spared explicit ignominy because she had passed away.

The bench further said that so far as Jayalalithaa and Sasikala are concerned, "one is the agent for other as partners of two firms and additionally Sasikala is the attorney of Jayalalithaa and is a co-conspirator, as imputed".
