Trump is doing what Obama didn't do: reach out and listen”

Conway tells New Jersey's Bergen County Record that "there are many ways to surveil each other".

A senior aide to President Trump, Conway said surveillance such as "microwaves that turn into cameras" are "a fact of modern life" along with tapping phones and spying through televisions.

She echoed that sentiment in a "Good Morning America" interview, saying she had "no evidence" to back Trump's claim and deferred to the findings of the congressional intelligence committees.

After she tried to pivot to Obamacare and her hosts reminded her that the issue of wiretapping was raised by President Trump, Conway responded that "it's under investigation".

Trump initially tweeted unsubstantiated claims that Barack Obama had illegally wiretapped Trump Tower before last fall's election.

In response to a similar line of questioning on CNN's "New Day", a program Conway and other White House officials have largely avoided in recent weeks, the counselor to the president said it was not her responsibility to provide evidence for an allegation. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The Bergen Record's Mike Kelly Monday morning told CNN that after interviewing Conway he believes her remarks invoking WikiLeaks claims of Central Intelligence Agency digital weapons are a "serious strategy by the Trump administration".

Trump has kept his distance from the press since last weekend, when he accused former President Barack Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower before the November election.

White House advisor Kellyanne Conway admitted she has no evidence to back up the assertions and accusations that President Donald Trump threw at the former president.

In the last two weeks, multiple fake news sites have written stories claiming that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has a warrant out for Obama's arrest stemming from allegations he wiretapped Trump's phones.

Declaring that Congress "must get to the bottom" of Trump's claim, senators Lindsey Graham and Sheldon Whitehouse asked Comey and the acting deputy attorney general, Dana Boente, to produce the paper trail created when the justice department's criminal division secures warrants for wiretaps.

She then added: "Microwaves that turn into cameras etc" - but it's fair to say not everyone agrees with Conway's claim.

"We should be able to determine in fairly short order whether this allegation is true or false", Mr Schiff said.
