Violent Knife-Brandishing Suspect Shot To Death By Orange Police

Violent Knife-Brandishing Suspect Shot To Death By Orange Policeā€

A possibly suicidal California man was forced from his vehicle by blasts of water from a powerful fire hose and then fatally shot by police in a wild Sunday night standoff caught on video.

A non-lethal round of rubber projectiles was ineffective so officers used lethal force, Lopez said.

When the man exited a driver's side window, he reached behind his back, pulled a knife and there was an officer-involved shooting, Thorsen said, adding that the man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the video, the man was partially blocked from view by another vehicle after he climbed out and struggled with officers.

Police officers broke the man's passenger window with batons, Lopez said, and then used a fire hose to spray high-pressure water into the vehicle.

The Orange County Register is reporting that a man shot by police in a freakish and dramatic traffic stop gone wrong has died. No weapon is seen but a voice is heard yelling "knife" moments before two shots rang out.

Landslide at Ethiopia landfill kills 46
Dozens were buried when a mountain of trash at the 50-year-old Koshe dumpsite came crashing down with little warning on Saturday. The death toll in a landslide at a huge garbage dump on the outskirts of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, has risen to 48.

One officer fired a round that hit the suspect in the upper chest area, Thorsen said.

"We felt this guy was going to light himself on fire or blow the auto up", Lopez said. He was identified only as a man in his 30s. Thorsen said an active warrant was out in connection with the minivan.

Lopez says the incident happened at a strip mall parking lot. "I thought he was going to surrender".

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is investigating.

The man was driving a white GMC van, and around 11:15 p.m., officers tried to pull him over for a vehicle code violation, according to the Orange Police Department.

The Orange Fire Department soon arrived on scene with a fire hose to assist police in extracting the man from his auto.
