Intel Chief: No Evidence of Any Trump Wiretap”

There is no evidence to corroborate President Donald Trump's claim that his Manhattan tower was tapped by his predecessor, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee said Wednesday.

At a press conference he said: "I don't think there was an actual tap of Trump Tower".

On 4 March, Mr Trump sparked a furore when wrote on his @realDonaldTrump Twitter account that Mr Obama had tapped into communications at Trump Tower, New York home to the president and first family, before the 8 November election.

Earlier this month, Director Comey stated that Trump's wiretapping claim against his predecessor was false and must be corrected. The Justice Department missed a Monday deadline to provide evidence to the House committee and now has until next Monday to respond. "But it's an illegal thing; they've been doing it, they've done it before and I think it's a disgrace".

Did Trump mean what he said?

Both Nunes and Schiff agreed that Trump was likely incorrect if one were to take his claims literally, but Nunes acknowledged the "concern that the president has about other people, other surveillance activities looking at him or his associates".

Two senators on a key Senate Judiciary subcommittee are at odds over whether Comey privately assured them that he would confirm by Wednesday whether there's a criminal investigation into Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation.

Mr. Nunes said he's seen no evidence of that, while Mr. Schiff said he wouldn't make that categorical denial, but declined to give more information at this point in the investigation. Given how Trump stonewalled ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl, it sounds like the president hasn't seen any evidence either.

Schiff said he will ask FBI Director James Comey directly about the claims when he testifies March 20. The FBI and House and Senate committees are investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election and possible contacts between Trump associates and Russians. Trump, it seems, has yet to grasp the fact that, as president, his words carry greater meaning.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans alike have called upon Trump to clarify his wiretapping claims and to provide evidence to support them in an effort to "clear up" the situation.

"Um, look, um, answer's no", he said.

Mr Nunes said that while he did not believe Mr Trump had been wiretapped, he said he remained concerned about two issues - whether Americans had been electronically eavesdropped on and if anyone had been "unmasked' by the intelligence services".
