Netflix Replacing Star Rating System With Thumbs Up or Down

Netflix Replacing Star Rating System With Thumbs Up or Down”

The executive said Netflix tested the new system previous year and found that users volunteered 200 percent more ratings when faced with a simple up or down choice than when having five options - so the system will result in more feedback from viewers.

The company says after running a series of user tests, they found a 200% increase in engagement with ratings using the thumbs up/thumbs down decision.

If you consider yourself a couch critic and have spent far too much time on Netflix agonizing over whether or not a certain TV show or movie deserved three or four stars, this news might be disappointing. Why the change? Speaking with Variety, it's just the way of the future according to Todd Yellin, Netflix's VP of product innovation. Content that lines up with what users have shown to be their preferences via their pattern of viewing, will display percentage based compatibility. The on-demand video streaming giant is taking the YouTube route and will soon allow users to rate programs using a thumbs up, thumbs down system. It will give certain titles a percentage based on a user's past ratings and what they have watched. When you rate movies and TV shows, you're helping us filter through the thousands of selections to get a better idea of what you'd like to watch.

Netflix has been experimenting with the thumb system for months.

So, if you got a lot of enjoyment out of watching a movie, but only rated it two stars because it's not what the rest of the world would deem a quality picture, Netflix will think you hated it.
