Russian Federation summons Israeli envoy following IDF strikes in Syria

Russian Federation summons Israeli envoy following IDF strikes in Syriaā€¯

Israel and Syria are still technically at war, though the border had remained largely quiet for decades until 2011 when the Syrian conflict began.

In an unusual move, Prime Minister Netanyahu released a statement on Friday regarding the IAF airstrike on Syrian territory which happened earlier on Friday morning.

Israel said one of the missiles shot by Syria was intercepted by Israel's Arrow missile defense system - the first time it is used since it was deployed two decades ago.

Although none of the Israeli aircraft were hit, one of the missiles was intercepted close to Jerusalem by an Israeli missile defence system.

"At no point was the safety of Israeli civilians or the IAF (Israeli air force) aircraft compromised", an Israeli military spokesman said. Today's incidents were different in a few ways: Israel publicly acknowledged that they carried out the strikes, though they didn't say what was struck, and Syria fired anti-aircraft missiles at the raiding warplanes.

Israeli officials did confirm that their planes withdraw when Syria fired the anti-aircraft missiles, but never publicly said what was targeted. The system was developed with financial backing from the U.S.in response to Arab states' long-range surface-to-surface missiles.

Prices were also helped by a weaker dollar in the wake of the Federal Reserve's less-hawkish-than-expected rate announcement. A continuation of those factors can "cause oil prices to increase above $60 per barrel by year-end", said Yepez.

The Arrow 3 interceptor, created to shoot down ballistic missiles, was deployed to Israeli air force ground crews in January after successful testing by Israel and the United States.

Israel's ambassador to Russian Federation was summoned by Russia's Foreign Minister on Friday to give an explanation for Israel's Thursday night air strikes in Syria, Israeli media reported.

The missile fire from Syria prompted air raid sirens to go off in the Jordan Valley during the night, the Israeli army said.

However, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman seemed to have acknowledged an Israeli raid into Syria last December, which he said prevented Hezbollah from obtaining "advanced weapons, military equipment and weapons of mass destruction".

"If the Islamic State loses, what will you do with Iran in Syria?" the Shiite militia leader asked. It added that the Israeli warplanes flew into Syria via Lebanon and targeted a military position in central Syria.
