GOP govs: ObamaCare repeal bill shifts 'significant' costs to states”

Shifting public opinion has also complicated the calculus for Republicans, increasing the political risk of giving into conservative demands for a total rollback of the health law.

"I want everyone to know, I'm 100 percent behind this", Trump said after the meeting. He said he believes they have not agreed to quickly phase out an expansion of Medicaid, another conservative demand.

Rep. Tom McClintock of California, a former Freedom Caucus member, said he was "looking at it" when asked last week whether he supports the bill. GOP divisions also threaten the legislation in that chamber.

RSC Chairman Mark Walker, R-N.C., said the decision to support the plan came after an agreement on changes to the legislation.

Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky is also now on board after the changes promised at the White House meeting. He said that optional work requirement "doesn't move the ball more than a couple yards on a very long playing field".

The Republican answer to Obamacare has been analysed and though it will save the government money, it will likely leave millions without health insurance, a report has found. Nevada's Dean Heller, Ohio's Rob Portman, and Arkansas's Tom Cotton are among the Republican senators who have expressed reservations about the House bill.

It also said that enacting the legislation now before Congress - a measure backed by President Donald Trump - would reduce the federal deficit by some $337 billion over the next decade, a relatively small savings given the massive size of the U.S. economy.

President Donald Trump has been talking with GOP lawmakers about potential changes. "If I were them, I would not want to talk about this bill either".

"I can not sit idly by and let this opportunity pass", she said.

There are other signs of trouble for the bill, in particular among moderates in the Senate and in states, who oppose some of the changes being proposed to get the bill through the House.

House Republicans' proposal to revise the Affordable Care Act in the United States would lower the number of Americans with health insurance by 24 million while reducing the federal deficit by US$337 billion by 2026, congressional budget analysts said. "To my Republican colleagues who have doubts, today I encourage you: Don't cut off the discussion". Republicans can only lose three votes and still expect the bill to get out of committee. "The [states that didn't expand Medicaid] have different issues than the expansion states. The states with older populations have different issues than those with younger populations".

The committee mostly is charged with fusing GOP bills into a package that can avoid a Democratic filibuster later on, but she cannot afford to lose more than a few members from her 22-to-14 majority.

Some GOP governors weighed in Thursday evening in a letter to congressional leaders saying the House bill gives them nearly no new flexibility and lacks sufficient resources to protect the vulnerable.

"It provides nearly no new flexibility for states, does not ensure the resources necessary to make sure no one is left out, and shifts significant new costs to states", the letter - signed by Govs.
