The Brazilian Beef Exporters Association (ABIEC) said none of its 29 member companies' beef plants have been named in the adulterated meat products scandal.

The EU "will guarantee that any of the establishments involved in the fraud will be suspended", said Mr Brivio, who did not cite companies by name or say how long the ban will last.

One of the country's largest meat processors, BRF, said it was cooperating with the police investigation and stressed that it followed high sanitary and food safety controls. The company said a JBS veterinarian employed at the Lapa factory in Paraná has been served with a "judicial measure".

The scandal also broke just days before the start of negotiations to seek a free-trade accord between the European Union and several South American countries including Brazil.
