Officials confirm 2nd measles case connected with first, caught from same flight”

A second case of measles in MI has been confirmed as a Livingston County resident.

Seven of the eight cases occurred in children who had been in contact with one another, and six of the affected children have been hospitalized.

Washtenaw County Public Health is warning of a possible exposure to measles after a second case discovered in a MI adult.

The person was identified as an adult who shared a flight with the first measles patient when that person was still contagious.

Measles is a viral infection that can result in pneumonia, brain inflammation or death. Symptoms include high fever, runny nose, cough, reddened light-sensitive eyes, and a red raised body rash. It is also typified by a rash that spreads from the head down to the rest of the body.

This increases the possibity of exposing others to the infectino.

Measles outbreaks are rare in the US, but the highly contagious disease still is found in other parts of the world. "The measles vaccine is effective and safe", said Dr. Jessie Kimbrough Marshall, the county agency's medical director.

The United States has made tremendous progress against measles.

According to the CDC, measles is still widespread in many parts of the world, including countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Pacific.

"So, if one person has it, about 90 percent of the people close to that person who are not immune or who have not been vaccinated will also become infected", she told WWJ's Dr. Deanna Lites.
