Russians arrest 3 in subway bombing case, defuse device”

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Russian security agents on Thursday arrested three people suspected of links to a suicide bomber accused of attacking the city's subway and deactivated an explosive device in the apartment where the suspects lived.

They were detained two days after Akbarzhon Dzhalilov, a 22-year-old Russian born in Kyrgyzstan, blew himself up on a Metro train in the city, killing 14 and injuring more than 50.

Interfax cited a source saying the blast was caused by a bomb filled with shrapnel.

Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday that the fact that Putin was in the city when the bomb went off, although several dozen miles away from where he was hosting talks, "makes one pause" and is "something for the intelligence agencies to analyze".

"We didn't expect to hear such news today", said the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she feared for her personal safety.

The competent Kyrgyz bodies are giving their assistance to law enforcement bodies of Russian Federation in the investigation of this case, the statement said.

In a meeting on Wednesday with the heads of security services from most of Russia's Central Asian neighbors, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of the terrorist threat facing the region.

The Monday explosion claimed the lives of at least 14 people, 55 others remain in hospitals.

Russia's state investigative committee, a body with sweeping powers that is looking into the bomber's background, said in a statement it was looking into the backgrounds of people it suspected of being accomplices.

The statement from the Investigative Committee gave few details, but said those arrested came from Central Asian countries that once were part of the Soviet Union.

The attack follows a long string of bombings of Russian planes, trains and transportation facilities.

Security officials raided the apartment on Thursday (local time) and a witness present during the search said she saw belongings packed into bags and boxes, and household containers with an unidentified powder inside.

Separately, a homeless Russian man was injured on Thursday when a homemade device placed in a bag near a school exploded in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, according to local media.
