Sharks beat Oilers 3-2 in overtime in Game 1

Sharks beat Oilers 3-2 in overtime in Game 1”

Game 3 goes Sunday night in San Jose. The Oilers opened the scoring at 6:44 when Oscar Klefbom took a cross-ice pass from Jordan Eberle and took a low shot that deflected off Sharks defenseman David Schlemko and into the goal.

San Jose had the task of killing an Edmonton power play while down not one, but two skaters for as much as 1:41. Burns led San Jose with six points (two goals, four assists) vs. the Oilers.

Their work paid off with the tying goal at the 5:22 mark of the third period. The Sharks repeatedly trapped the Oilers in their own end. Joonas Donskoi came around behind the net and fed the puck in front on the backhand to Ward, who redirected the puck past Talbot.

The first period of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs couldn't have gone better for the Edmonton Oilers. Kassian scored early in the second period and McDavid doubled the lead midway through the third period. The Sharks failed to generate any pressure at even strength, could not capitalize on a multitude of power plays, allowed two shorthanded goals, and wasted a 34-save performance from Martin Jones for good measure. That crowd is going to be bonkers and they are hungry for playoff hockey.

Oilers: Milan Lucic. The big forward factored in on both goals in Game 1, with one goal and one assist. Previous year the Sharks snuck up on the Western Conference with excellent goaltending and clutch performances by a variety of players.

The Sharks power play was no great shakes in the regular season, ranked 25th at 16.7 per cent. Getting the more experienced playoff team and the plus money is where I see value in this matchup. "Whether you are happy with certain stretches of your game or not, we believed guys could step up and hit some levels and those guys' games just got better and better as the night went on".

"We were confident we could go out and turn things around (after the first period)", Couture said.

"Whether they're healthy or not healthy, you try to be physical on guys no matter what", Lucic said.

"I think you could argue that coming off that high in the first period led us to not being as sharp as we needed to be for the rest of the game", said Eric Gryba, the Oilers' brawny defenceman. They took different paths to get to this point, but Meier, with his size, is showing he can be a valuable piece of the puzzle for the Sharks. It just happens that games 83 to 90, we're going to play the same team.

That doesn't come as a big surprise to the Sharks or coach Pete DeBoer. "We've seen that before. If we keep playing this same way, we will win the next game here, too". "We expect it and we'll deal with it like we always have".

Fans at the Sharks official watch party at Rookie's Sports Bar hope this year, they'll win the cup after last year's bittersweet disappointment.

"Our fans have proven time and again that they're the best in the league and we expected no less from Wednesday's game".

The onus is on them now, especially in the defensive and neutral zones, to compete as hard as the their opponent did in game one.
