South Korea: North Korea missile test ends in failure

South Korea: North Korea missile test ends in failureā€

US Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday arrived on a three-day visit to South Korea to reaffirm the robust security alliance and warn against North Korea's possible provocation, officials said.

On a long-planned 10-day trip to Asia, his first official visit to the region, Mr Pence will reaffirm the U.S. commitment to stand by its regional allies, officials say. This matters because while North Korea regularly launches short-range missiles, it is also developing mid-range and long-range missiles meant to target USA troops in Asia and, eventually, the US mainland.

There were no further details, and the office said it was analyzing the launch.

After a two-month policy review, officials settled on a policy dubbed "maximum pressure and engagement", US officials said Friday.

U.S. officials were quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying that the Trump administration was focusing more on raising pressure on North Korea with the help of China rather than using military force. "I have great confidence that China will properly deal with North Korea".

The launch comes one day after North Korea revealed several new weapons systems, including what appear to be new intercontinental ballistic missile models (ICBM), during a military parade in Pyongyang.

The North regularly launches short-range missiles, but is also developing mid-range and long-range missiles meant to target US troops in Asia and, eventually, the USA mainland.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday said that North Korea could be capable of firing a missile carrying sarin gas at Japan, according to reports. Thousands of USA and South Korean troops, tanks and other weaponry were also deployed last month in their biggest-ever joint military exercises, which prompted North Korea to issue routine threats of attacks on its rival if they show signs of aggression.

Pence's first trip to South Korea carries personal meaning as well. The regime's last missile launch came less than two weeks ago on April 5th, and that was a medium-range KN-15 ballistic missile. Commercial satellite imagery of North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site obtained by 38 North, a program devoted to analysis of the country at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, showed activity at the site suggestive of preparations for a nuclear test.

Washington sees North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles as a threat to world security and to its Asian allies, Japan and South Korea.

Always high animosity has risen on the Korean Peninsula in recent months, as the United States and South Korea conduct annual war games that North Korea claims are invasion preparation and the North prepared for Saturday's anniversary celebrations. He said Pence will try to balance reassurance with a willingness to respond if North Korea acts.

The Chinese government announced in February it would ban coal imports from North Korea until the end of the year.

Trump has suggested the USA will take a tougher stance against North Korea, telling reporters last week: "North Korea is a problem".
