'Fate of the Furious' races to biggest global box office opening ever”

Despite the mind-boggling worldwide numbers, "The Fate of the Furious" didn't manage to top the domestic opening-weekend gross of its predecessor, "Furious 7", which raked in $142 mil at the North American box office during its opening weekend in 2015.

"The Fate of the Furious" was the number one movie at the box office, taking in $100.2 million in its opening weekend.

Exhibitor Relations said the latest chapter in Universal Studio's "Fast and Furious" series accounted for almost two-thirds of North American revenues over the three-day Easter weekend, leaving previous frontrunner "The Boss Baby", a Fox/DreamWorks animation, in its dust with just $15.5 million in sales.

According to reports, the eighth "Fast and the Furious" film brought in a record $190 million in China alone, in addition to $17.8 million in Mexico and $17 million from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Fate of the Furious' global success is proof of the need for Hollywood to take its blockbusters beyond domestic audiences.

The $532.5 million global debut, once North American revenues added in, would break the record of $529 million held by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". "The Fate of the Furious" took in an estimated $100.2 million, an impressive result, but a steep drop off from "Furious 7's" $147.2 million kick-off.

Russians arrest 3 in subway bombing case, defuse device
The attack follows a long string of bombings of Russian planes, trains and transportation facilities. The Monday explosion claimed the lives of at least 14 people, 55 others remain in hospitals.

The Fate of the Furious may have shattered records in worldwide markets, but domestically it settled for a handful of second and third place spots.

The eighth "Furious" franchise film, which an unforgiving critical eye might say is maybe a few classy auto chases ahead of a video game, stars Vin Diesel, The Rock, Ludacris and Charlize Theron. Before then, however, you can see him in The Fate of the Furious now.

The film, directed by F. Gary Gray of "Straight Outta Compton" fame, also features Charlize Theron, Tyrese Gibson and hip-hop star Ludacris.

"Beauty and the Beast" continued to draw viewers, earning $13.6 million in its fifth week out.

New Line's "Going in Style" rounded out the top five, earning $6.3 million. Warner Bros.' "Going in Style" finished fifth with an estimated 6.35 million US dollars in its second weekend.
