Sliding home: Jackie Robinson gets statue at Dodger Stadium”

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball on April 15, 1947.

Each year on April 15, Major League Baseball celebrates the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson.

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 by becoming the first African-American to play baseball in the major leagues. It depicts Robinson stealing home and is located in the left field entrance of Dodger Stadium.

Now 94, Rachel Robinson is traveling from the East Coast to attend the unveiling, along with daughter Sharon and son David.

Dodgers chairman Mark Walter had just met Robinson's wife, Rachel, when he rose and approached her.

Robinson's journey to Brooklyn had one final stop after being signed in 1945 by Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey: a season in the minor leagues.

There was, of course, much more, and yet it pales in comparison to Robinson's impact on baseball to this day.

Fittingly, Jackie Robinson is the first to be honored with a statue at Dodger Stadium.

The statue of Robinson is said to be 77 inches tall and features Jackie sliding into home base.

It was Campanis' stumbling interview on ABC's "Nightline" with Ted Koppel in 1987 that laid bare baseball's patronizing attitude toward blacks and forced the sport to begin taking the concept of equal opportunity more seriously.

Workers install a bronze statue of Dodgers legend Jackie Robinson outside Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Robinson, raised in California, got a taste of the Canadian winter as the Royals capped off the year by beating the American Association's Louisville Colonels for the Junior World Series championship. The day he stepped on that baseball field was an important day, not just in baseball, but in American history.

"If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be in baseball and I wouldn't be working as a player and I wouldn't have this job".

"I thought it captured Jackie Robinson's significance in American history", Cadet said.

"It's amusing, I'm more happy because of his statue than the two I got (Staples Center, Michigan State)".

Twenty years ago today, baseball retired Robinson's No. 42, in a dramatic announcement madeat Shea Stadium in NY by Commissioner Bud Selig, who was flanked by Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson; and President Bill Clinton. In fact, Robinson has been rewritten as an apolitical hero we can all rally around (ignoring more complicated aspects of his ideology), so praising him is the opposite of a radical position.
