Five things we learned from the Bahrain GP

Five things we learned from the Bahrain GP”

Sebastian Vettel has won the 2017 Bahrain Grand Prix from third place on the grid, with Lewis Hamilton in second and Valtteri Bottas in third.

It's going to be in all the highlight reels from here, so let's hear it again: "I've never raced with less power in my life".

"We have a bit to do at the tests", Hamilton said before his return on the Sakhir Circuit which hosted the Bahrain GP on Sunday. Ferrari did a better job.

"Today was tricky with it being so hot and very gusty but we still managed to get through plenty of work", said Hamilton.

Yet to podium in 2017 after a fourth place in China and failing to finish in Melbourne, Ricciardo couldn't help but feel disappointed at the outcome. "I apologise to the team for losing that time there..."

Mercedes were forced to stack their cars as they pitted and Hamilton blocked Ricciardo into the pit entry, earning himself a five-second penalty that would cruel his chances of taking victory despite his superior race pace.

Despite twice being let through by team-mate Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton was unable to chase down Vettel and had to settle for second, finishing 6.6 seconds behind the Ferrari driver.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen had already crashed out by then, blaming brake failure after he trekked across the gravel into the tyre barrier on lap 12.

However he later claimed he misspoke after being pressed about the claim at the White House daily briefing. You look at, uh, different things over the years with President Obama, everybody, he's been outplayed.

Bottas had started on pole for the first time in his Formula 1 career and while he held the lead until the first pit stops, he struggled for pace throughout the race. "But I'm definitely a team player so I wouldn't say no to that [team order]". Ferrari then opted for an aggressive strategy, pitting Vettel on lap 10 in the hope of leap frogging the sluggish Mercedes with some quick, unimpeded laps.

Hamilton was catching the German on every lap but ran out of time and finished nearly seven seconds behind.

A decisive moment in the race came a lap later when the safety auto was deployed for a collision at Turn 1 between Williams' Canadian rookie Lance Stroll and Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz.

"Then the safety vehicle came out, we put the softs on and that tyre was just not happening for us today".

"I'm sorry and apologise, but we still got good points for the team and we still had a great fight".

The safety auto prompted many cars to pit including the two Mercedes who chose to stack their drivers.

The turmoil at McLaren deepened Tuesday when development driver Oliver Turvey missed most of testing in Bahrain with an engine leak, as Lewis Hamilton went fastest in his Mercedes.
