House race in heavily GOP Kansas surprisingly competitive

House race in heavily GOP Kansas surprisingly competitiveā€

A win is a win - and Republicans avoided the catastrophic outcome of losing in a congressional district where President Donald Trump won by 27 points last November.

In the campaign's final weekend, the NRCC spent close to $100,000 on the race, and the GOP-allied Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC paid for tens of thousands of get-out-the-vote phone calls. It was the first special congressional election since Trump's election as president past year.

At the state level, the Thompson campaign became involved in a public dispute with the Kansas Democratic Party last month over a rejected request for $20,000 to use for mailers.

The surprisingly close results of Tuesday's special election for a House seat in deep-red Kansas should serve as "a warning sign" to the GOP, Sen.

Estes handily won the district's rural counties.

Pompeo won the 4th District with 60 percent of the vote in November before his presidential appointment.

"You have to let these races unfold in their unique milieu and not turn it into a partisan proxy war", Russell said.

Thompson won the Kansas Democratic Party's nomination in February by defeating a well-known politician, former State Treasurer Dennis McKinney. Trump's job approval ratings have hovered around 40 percent, creating unease among Republicans looking to maintain their congressional majorities.

He added that Thompson achieved "a showing that makes the entire country understand that grassroots America is beginning to stand up and fight back against the 1 percent (of the wealthy) - and that the momentum is with us".

Estes held off Democrat James Thompson, a civil rights attorney, to claim the 4th congressional district seat occupied by Republicans for more than two decades.

Lucy Jones-Phillips, a 31-year-old insurance representative and Democrat, acknowledged she doesn't vote in every election, but said she voted for Thompson because she wanted to ensure supporters of Gov. Sam Brownback are not in office.

Only Sedgwick County showed Thompson ahead of Estes. Dan Glickman (D) was swept out by a Republican electoral victory wave in 1994 fueled in part by anti-abortion activists.

Also, the National Republican Congressional Committee spent almost $100,000 on ads in the closing days. A tally Tuesday morning showed more than 12,600 donors to Thompson. Libertarian Chris Rockhold was also on the ballot and drew less than 2 percent of the vote. Candidates in special elections also don't have the advantages held by incumbents. Republicans pulled in U.S. Sen. National resources from both parties flooded into the race, but most importantly, Donald Trump himself began to campaign on Estes' behalf.

The tweet follows get-out-the-vote calls that Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have recorded for Estes.

It was a victory for Estes and for other Republicans in the state.

Thompson came up short in his bid to beat Republican state Treasurer Ron Estes in a special election to replace current Central Intelligence Agency director and former U.S. Rep Mike Pompeo in the Kansas 4th congressional district.

In a sign of nervousness in the waning days of the campaign, Republicans poured money into the race to bolster Estes.
