Soon, Facebook tech will let our brains type!

Soon, Facebook tech will let our brains type!”

Building 8 is said to be working on multiple projects, including a system that would enable users to type words using only their minds.

Facebook of course is a company that is investing heavily in research at the moment, and is not afraid of branching out in the hardware arena. "We're building further out beyond augmented reality and that includes work around direct brain interfaces that are going to eventually one day let you communicate using only your mind", Zuckerberg said. Little has been publically revealed about Building 8 until Wednesday, when Facebook confirmed the division's first two projects.

But it was another keynote speech by Regina Dugan, the head of Building 8, the product development and research team at Facebook, that really caught the eye. Similarly, you have many thoughts and choose to share only some of them. Now Facebook is developing a silent speech interface with the 'speed and flexibility of voice with the privacy of text.' Facebook also clarified they are creating the technology to discern between your private thoughts and those you want to share. According to Dr. Jason Taylor, a neuroscientist at Manchester University, the type of "brain reading" experiment we hear about today requires participants to lie still in an MRI scanner for an hour while watching a film or a stream of images of different types of objects. Facebook showed a video of a woman with ALS who, with the company's implants, is able to type eight words a minute without moving her fingers.

Currently, people using brain implants are capable of typing eight words per minute, she said, and Reuters noted that the company's goal is to partner with researchers at universities across the USA to make a non-invasive interface capable of typing 100 words per minute by thinking. Dugan said, "It sounds impossible but it's closer than you think", She joined Facebook from Google last 2016 and once led DARPA, the USA government's advanced defense research division. One of the projects is a technology that allows people to type with their brains, while the other is a technology that allows hearing vibrations on the skin.

That being said Facebook is not only working on transmitting speech but also receiving it in an entirely new way as well.

"Just as you take many photos and decide to share some of them, so too, you have many thoughts and decide to share some of them in the form of the spoken word", Dugan said.

"Even something as simple as a "yes/no" brain click, or a "brain mouse" would be transformative", Dugan said in a Facebook post. Instead of implanting anything into the brain, Facebook is planning non-invasive ways of using wearable sensors.

"If we put these things together, it suggests one day not so far away it may be possible for me to think in Mandarin and for you to feel it instantly in Spanish", Dugan said.
