Why Jason Chaffetz's leaving Congress makes Democrats smile

Why Jason Chaffetz's leaving Congress makes Democrats smileā€

A key U.S. Republican congressman who said this week he would not seek re-election or run for any other office next year now says he may leave Congress before his term in the House of Representatives runs out in early 2019.

After wrapping up his Presidential campaign in December, McMullin told a Reddit AMA that he has not made a decision about his political future, and sources say that hasn't changed-though McMullin's operation found out only this morning that Chaffetz would be leaving office.

"After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018", Chaffetz said in a Facebook post.

Still, in his statement, Chaffetz maintained that it was not this possibility of losing that has made him give up his seat - but then again, would he say anything different? After more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time.

ACC extends deals with North Carolina sites after law change
The ACC's agreement to hold the game at the Charlotte venue, originally set to run through 2019, has been extended through 2020. Columbia, South Carolina, last hosted games in 1970, while Hartford, Connecticut, has not served as host since 1998.

But Chaffetz has balked at the slightest suggestion his committee should investigate President Trump, despite the obvious opportunities to do so. According to an intel community source, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has learned that Russian Federation has "kompromat" blackmail material on Chaffetz and has been using it to keep him in line with regard to Trump's Russian Federation scandal.

Chaffetz has seen a rough start to 2017, including a town hall meeting at the beginning of February in Cottonwood Heights where a crowd of angry constituents openly booed Chaffetz and led chants of "Do your job!". He said he got a call from Chaffetz Tuesday night about his plans. Democrats clearly have the momentum firmly on their side.

Evans predicted several Republicans will line up to replace Chaffetz, including Provo Mayor John Curtis, former state GOP chair Thomas Wright, Utah's House Speaker Greg Hughes and state Sen. Instead, the five-term congressman said he wants to spend time with his family, return to the private sector and potentially run for Utah governor.

Chaffetz's decision is likely bad news for Allen and the Democrats, as the district is normally not a competitive opportunity. He has laid out an agenda for the first two years of the Trump administration focusing on continued oversight of agencies; support for whistleblowers; open government; limited rule-making; scrutiny of the union role in the federal workplace; and addressing poor performance and misconduct by employees.
